I see beauty in everything
Portfolio
Armindo De Matos
Armindo's photography explores the interplay of light, shadow, and
texture, often embracing the beauty of lines, repetition, and
curvature. His fascination with the mystery of shadows invites
viewers into uncharted territories of imagination, where light
bounces and weaves new narratives.
Experimentation is central to Armindo’s creative process, whether
through double exposures with veiled meanings or the deliberate
layering of images to convey depth and complexity. While his
black-and-white photography captures timeless elegance, his
exposure to diverse cultures and environments introduces rich,
vibrant colour and intricate patterns into his work.
In recent years, Armindo’s art has delved into personal themes,
including trauma and self-therapy. Through photography, he
confronts his past, including the scars of strict discipline, military
service, and personal accidents, using his medium as a tool for
healing and self-expression. His images serve as a visual diary,
giving form to emotions and experiences that words cannot fully
capture.

Bio
Armindo De Matos is a South African-born photographer
with Portuguese heritage, whose upbringing between
South Africa, Portugal, and Mozambique has shaped his
unique perspective. After 27 years as a Motor Engineer,
Armindo relocated to England, where he pursued his
lifelong passion for the arts. Recently, he earned a BA
(Hons) in Photography from the University of Bedfordshire,
marking a new chapter in his creative journey.
His work is deeply influenced by his technical background,
which lends a distinctive edge to his artistry. Armindo’s
curiosity about patterns, textures, light, and shadow allows
him to create evocative and thought-provoking images.
Drawing inspiration from his multicultural upbringing and life
experiences, his photography combines personal
expression with bold experimentation.
My approach
Photography is my way of making sense of the world and
myself. I’m drawn to the interplay of light, shadow, and
texture, where mystery and meaning collide. Patterns,
repetition, and the distortion of forms by light fascinate me,
revealing hidden dimensions in the ordinary.
I use experimentation to push boundaries, letting shadows
and double exposures tell layered stories that words
cannot. Through my lens, I explore emotion, imagination,
and the unspoken—sharing not just what I see, but how I
feel.

Eotional Damage
This project explores the psychological and
physical wounds shaped by patriarchal culture,
which taught men to be rigid, emotionless, and
violent. It reflects on my personal experiences
of abuse and the emotional scars left by
suppressing vulnerability, using art as a form of
self-therapy to express feelings I was never
allowed to show.

Used
The series "Used" critiques contemporary beauty
standards shaped by omnipresent advertising,
juxtaposing scrunched Vogue model photos with
crushed Coca-Cola tins. This combination
highlights the throw-away culture of modern
society, drawing inspiration from personal
experiences and artists like Man Ray, George
Condo, and John Berger.
